NPR

"Murderbot has managed the impossible. It's found a way to take the oldest, most tired, most overused premise in all of science-fiction – What does it mean … to be human? – and mine it for comedy gold."

Roger Ebert

Despite the elegant production design and admirable effects, "Murderbot" feels like a sci-fi comedy still searching for identity.

Though the series has promising aspects –namely because of Skarsgård’s performance, a flimsy plot and uneven pacing may fail to keep viewers tuned in.

There’s enough of this Murderbot to love that it’s worth the brief, breezy watch. Adaptations should stand on their own ... there, this Murderbot mostly succeeds. But what it’s lost is something more fundamental about the core of what makes Wells’s books so compelling.

The best part about Murderbot, by a long shot, is Skarsgard’s performance... It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s entertaining enough, a mostly light and breezy glimpse into a fictional universe that certainly feels like it has a lot more potential.

But as it is forced to spend more time with this motley crew of weirdos ... SecUnit becomes increasingly curious about the everyday lives they live. The basic narrative beats of the story are fairly simple: Murderbot attempts to hide its 'unique' governance situation (or lack thereof) from its new clients ... But though it’s no longer specifically required to do so, it can’t seem to stop saving their lives, and the tension between its robotic nature and growing consciousness gives rise to questions of identity and purpose it doesn’t entirely understand.

Murderbot may be built to kill — but it’s just like me. It’s heartwarming watching it not only grow into itself, but find the right people to allow for that growth.
