Roger Ebert

“mother!” is at times horrifying, at times riveting, at times baffling, and at times like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It both owes a debt to horror masters like Polanski and De Palma and is so distinctly a movie that no one else could make.

The Guardian

Mother! is a delirious, disgraceful experience – just make sure you give it space to breathe.

The Guardian

Darren Aronofsky’s toweringly outrageous film leaves no gob unsmacked. It is an event-movie detonation, a phantasmagorical horror and black-comic nightmare that jams the narcosis needle right into your abdomen.

Philosophy in Film

"Mother! is definitely polarizing, but it will also prove to be a crowning achievement in Aronofsky’s career."

Escape Into Film

"Mother! is not for the casual moviegoer – the extreme and grotesque violence of the third act cannot be overstated enough. That said, it is one of the essential 'must see' films of 2017. This visceral, unsettling waking nightmare takes time to process and deserves credit for its bold storytelling and visionary filmmaking."

MSB Reviews

"This is a film that's going to be discussed for years without end due to one of the most controversial, offensive and shocking screenplays of all-time. ... As for myself, I truly think that Darren Aronofsky just produced a masterpiece."

ASHEVILLE GRIT

If Darren Aronofsky had named mother! honestly, the title would have probably been an exclamation mark and nothing more. The movie is shocking—disgusting even at points. It leaves the audience feeling emotionally spent but also, like the use of the punctuation mark, can be so overtly hyperbolic that it falls flat.

Reviews from My Couch

Although I enjoyed a good chunk of it (I probably was looking at a 3.5/5 rating), the end is so bad that it knocks it all the way down to a 2. It’s just not worth the time.
