How far would you go for a billion dollars? In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

Edgar Wright gör sin största film hittills med en nyversion av Stephen Kings dystopi. Resultatet är underhållande action, men mycket av samhällssatiren försvinner på vägen.

Roger Ebert

The relentless pace generates enough of an endorphin rush to power the movie beyond plausibility nitpicking.

The Guardian

The resulting film is never anything but likable and fun – though never actually disturbing in the way that it’s surely supposed to be and the ending is fudged and anticlimactic. Yet there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had. Wright accelerates to a sprint for some full-tilt chase sequences; there’s a nice punk aesthetic with protest ’zines being produced by underground rebels; and Wright always delivers those sugar-rush pop slams on the soundtrack...

NPR

The strongest parts of the movie are the parts when the running man, you know, runs. Wright... has a good feel for offbeat action... With all that said, as an action movie that hits the gas, gets the running man running, and doesn't let up, it works quite well, and it's a lot of fun.

Spokane Public Radio

Wright is in slam-bang crowd-pleaser mode here, and for about an hour in the middle, The Running Man works. The comedy mostly flops but the action set-pieces keep the movie humming along...

"It’s fun with a bucket of popcorn, hits a theme that will resonate, and gives audiences a good time... Never anything but likable and fun—There’s plenty of enjoyment to be had."

Wright’s nimble direction, retro-futuristic production design, and Glen Powell’s personification of a rage-filled anti-hero-turned-hero, make Wright’s adaptation a worthwhile, if ultimately frustrating, experience on the big or small screen.

IMDb

"If you walk in expecting a new Edgar Wright classic, you're almost guaranteed to walk out disappointed. As a random action flick, it's 'okay to good.' As an Edgar Wright movie, it's firmly on the weaker end of his filmography."
