The Guardian

"What American Psycho was to consumerism, We Need to Talk About Kevin is to both sexism and feminism, a brilliantly extreme parable, operatically pessimistic."

Common Sense Media

The film has more foreboding than actual on-screen violence, yet the atmosphere is so creepy and gloomy that the anticipation might be worse than in other films where viewers actually get to see comparable acts.

DVD Talk

We Need to Talk About Kevin is chilling because it dares to ask its viewers what they would do in the situation. Maybe nothing is wrong with Kevin if Eva and Franklin never discuss it?

Mediocre Movie Club

"If I had to give a one-line takeaway, it would be to not have children unless you are absolutely sure that you want them. Why potentially stack the deck with Kevins?"

Dead End Follies

The heavy visual nature of WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN ultimately works against its narrative and creates a confusing, bloated movie. Too bad, because mass murder is a subject of actuality and it's a story that doesn't point fingers at the usual suspects. That alone called for a more sober adaptation, but it's not what happened.

Rotten Tomatoes

The writing of the plotline was great and the dialogue was ingeniously written. What really stands out most to me in this film was Lynne Ramsay's direction. The photography is beautiful, the performances were incredible, the soundtrack was amazing.
