Roger Ebert

The new film adaptation of the book, directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, visualizes those scenes magnificently.

Rotten Tomatoes

Villeneuve has such a natural keen eye for pleasing visual compositions, but he also has the patience many famous big screen stylists lack.

The Guardian

Dune is dense, moody and quite often sublime – the missing link bridging the multiplex and the arthouse.

The Guardian

This eerily vast and awe-inspiring epic, a cathedral of interplanetary strangeness, is better than the attempt a generation ago by an acknowledged master.

The Hollywood Reporter

Denis Villeneuve’s attempt to tame the notoriously difficult novel about an interstellar empire at war over control of a precious natural resource has no lack of cinematic spectacle.

The Guardian

Whether it’s the samurai-style swordplay and inner voices of Star Wars or the Matrix-like question of Paul’s foretold divinity, many riffs can feel familiar. What makes them new is Villeneuve’s astonishing visual sensibility.

Dune is so aesthetically rich and monolithic that a few brief, misguided stabs at Marvel-style humor early on feel almost like blasphemy.

NPR

Villeneuve has made a grand, epic film that features the kind of action and spectacle you're likely expecting — but he hasn't let the sheer staggering scope of the endeavor sway him from his penchant for moody introspection.
