Overview

Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

The Guardian

"It's a film in the tradition of Planet of the Apes and Godzilla, with hints of serious pictures such as Children of Men... But what an action picture it is: the digital effects are so great they make it look like a documentary from hell."

Roger Ebert

District 9 does a lot of things right, including giving us aliens to remind us not everyone who comes in a spaceship need be angelic, octopod or stainless steel. ... There’s a harsh parable here about the alienation and treatment of refugees.

The Independent Critic

"District 9 is an unsettling, deeply moving and remarkably thoughtful film- all qualities that are largely devoid from Jackson's more techno-driven and, perhaps, more market-friendly films though I'll be utterly astounded if District 9 doesn't become one of Summer 2009's bigger hits with its marvelous blend of technology, humanity, intelligence and dark wit."

Common Sense Media

Constant, bloody, and brutal violence, some of it involving humans and some involving humanoid, insect-like aliens. Kicking, fighting, severed limbs. Torture, including a man being jabbed with cattle prod so that his hand will pull the trigger of a gun.

Rotten Tomatoes

"Funny and ferocious, cynical and satirical, 'District 9' is both ingeniously clever and reflectively thoughtful, a science fiction thriller that bubbles with social commentary."

IMDb

District 9 has so much to like. It's spectacular, darkly funny, entertaining and thoughtful all at the same time, and it's all done on a meager $30m budget. There is true talent on show here.
