Roger Ebert

What a sad man. What brief glory. What an enthralling film, 166 minutes, and it races past. There's a match here between Scorsese and his subject, perhaps because the director's own life journey allows him to see Howard Hughes with insight, sympathy -- and, up to a point, with admiration.

Working with many of his previous collaborators, Scorsese has crafted a rip-roaringly gorgeous-looking, beautifully acted biographical epic that is certain to garner Oscar nominations across the board.

Common Sense Media

THE AVIATOR chronicles the life of Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio), the man who produced era-defining movies, dated the world's biggest movie stars, founded an airline, owned seven Las Vegas casinos, designed and test-piloted airplanes, risked fortunes, and died as a recluse.

The Aviator is imposing, spectacular, and hard to get off the ground. But when it takes off, it soars.

ComingSoon.net

In my mind, The Aviator had a heavy weight on its shoulders considering it was the last attempt at a decent epic for 2004, and I am happy to say that it succeeds in every possible way.

IMDb

Leonardo Dicaprio, once again, shows his depth as an artist and his ability to carry a film. He deserves the Golden Globe, and his due as an outstanding actor.

Rotten Tomatoes

Howard Hughes remains tormented, suffering from paralyzing phobias and depression. The higher he rises, the farther he has to fall.

Solid movie about an extremely normal guy just being a cool dude. Flying planes, dating teenagers, drinking milk, making movies...
