Overview

In year 1250 B.C. during the late Bronze age, two emerging nations begin to clash. Paris, the Trojan prince, convinces Helen, Queen of Sparta, to leave her husband Menelaus, and sail with him back to Troy. After Menelaus finds out that his wife was taken by the Trojans, he asks his brother Agamemnon to help him get her back. Agamemnon sees this as an opportunity for power. They set off with 1,000 ships holding 50,000 Greeks to Troy.

Roger Ebert

"Troy" is based on the epic poem The Iliad by Homer, according to the credits. Homer's estate should sue. The movie sidesteps the existence of the Greek gods, turns its heroes into action movie cliches and demonstrates that we're getting tired of computer-generated armies.

No doubt this is pure Hollywood sensation, but it's also poignant storytelling, acutely sensitive to the themes of human frailty at the heart of its source.

Bruising battles and some stirring performances make Troy enjoyable, if rather long. But if audiences can forgive the camp, they’ll still struggle to empathise with the characters.

The line between epic spectacle and overblown bore is often as unclear as it is easily crossed. So it's no surprise that Wolfgang Petersen's Troy navigates that demarcation like a drunk driver on a twisty two-lane highway.

Brad Pitt delivers one of the best performances of his career as Achilles, giving the right amount of power and strength. ... 'Troy', in my review, 'action-packed, beautifully well-made'.

The fight between Hector and Achilles is reason enough to watch Troy alone.

Troy puts immense care into every single beat of its action, and as a result these sequences drive its emotions in a way the script often fails to achieve.
