Overview

Cool government operative James Bond searches for a stolen invention that can turn the sun's heat into a destructive weapon. He soon crosses paths with the menacing Francisco Scaramanga, a hitman so skilled he has a seven-figure working fee. Bond then joins forces with the swimsuit-clad Mary Goodnight, and together they track Scaramanga to a Thai tropical isle hideout where the killer-for-hire lures the slick spy into a deadly maze for a final duel.

Action-packed Bond film has sexual situations, shooting.

Empire

Roger Moore's Bond has got a rough deal over the year, but whilst this takes itself a little too lightly it has a lot going for it.

Metacritic

"The end result is a fascinating, but ultimately failed Bond movie."

Mana Pop

The plot to The Man with the Golden Gun doesn’t make a lot of sense, something to do with Scaramanga getting into bed with a Thai millionaire industrialist...but mostly the film is about Scaramanga wanting to test his skills against a worthy opponent ie Bond.

CineFiles Movie Reviews

Some of the more obnoxious elements of this film, such as a solar-powered laser and a flying car, hinder its ultimate success. But The Man With the Golden Gun is still a solid outing for Roger Moore, as well as a strong platform to highlight Christoper Lee’s slimy evil persona.

Dagon Dogs

The Man With the Golden Gun is one of the more grounded entries in the Moore era without losing the outlandish elements of the Bond franchise during this time. The villain is charismatic and iconic, and he has an evil lair with a laser gun.

Motion State Review

"But that’s why The Man with the Golden Gun stands out today when it didn’t in 1974 — it keeps Bond weird."

God this movie is tired. Whatever I liked about Roger Moore in Live and Let Die is gone here, where he just feels like a figure head here. Where most Bond films feel like they have a memorable sequence or two, this one has no scene that pops out in particular and is mostly just a slog.
