Roger Ebert

A great deal of money was spent on the fifth Bond epic in an attempt to duplicate this mystique, but in “You Only Live Twice” the formula fails to work its magic.

High On Films

Despite the script problems, “You Only Live Twice” delivers a lavish and extravagant entry in the Bond series, though it comes at the expense of a blockbuster formula that is starting to show its wear.

Common Sense Media

The movie contains much fighting, explosions, shooting, stabbing, and killing, with a minimum of blood. It's all very cartoonish.

I seem to be in the minority on this one but I think this is an all-time great Bond. With massive sets, beautiful Japanese locations, and Blofeld!... This is a seriously underrated wild ride. With great set pieces throughout, it is hardly boring.

Medium

"Connery’s performance is utterly lacklustre, with his annoyance with the role finally affecting his ability to portray Bond. This lack of effort is so noticeable, purely because he was always the best part of the previous films.... But as soon as the action shifts to the volcano — it’s like watching a different film... With the knowledge of what’s to come, I would still fully recommend this film."

More than anything, however, it’s a shame to see the focus of the movie shift away from the character of Bond in favor of building up a plot that isn’t exactly mind-blowing or interesting anyway.

IMDb

"This is formula Bond, but loaded with great action, neat gadgetry ('Little Nellie' is one of the most beloved Q gadgets) and the glorious sets by the one-and-only Bond veteran Ken Adam make it another high-flying, if not exactly groundbreaking, Bond adventure and one of the series' more fun entries."

Rotten Tomatoes

You Only Live Twice entertains with sheer scale and style—even if it occasionally lives a little too large.
